About Us

Atek Pads is a project of Lutino Adunu. Lutino Adunu is a community-based organization established to promote educational learning through community libraries, sponsorship, and the establishment of a model school to rebuild the lives of children in the post-conflict northern Uganda. Our goal in the Atek Pads project is to provide quality, and femininely reusable pads to restore hope and dignity to women and girls in Nwoya district.

In the summer of 2015, Shilla Adyero, the Founder and Executive Director of Lutino Adunu was honored by Nwoya District Local Government to visit ten primary schools in the Nwoya district as a role model in a campaign to end early child marriages. The interactions that transpired during the school visits with schools, teachers, and the community deepened Shilla's understanding of the challenges faced by girls in general. Some of the commonly mentioned challenges by the community included poverty and lack of sanitary towels among others. The girls in Nwoya district also demonstrated the continued use of old rags which obtain cause leakages as well as poses a high risk of infection.

In the same week, while visiting the schools, the District Probation Officer received death reports of two underage girls while giving birth. Research has indicated that Nwoya district leads in early child marriages in Uganda. In a bit, Lutino Adunu designed the Atek Reusable Pads. This project will provide locally made quality and affordable sanitary towels that will be used for as long 12 months. The introduction of this product will reduce girls the continued use of old rags which causes leakages as well as poses a high risk of infection to girls and women. Due to fear of leakages, many girls continued to miss up to 1-1½ weeks every month in a year which has resulted to girls to fall behind in school work or ever drop out of school eliminating the only possible opportunity to break the cycle of poverty. Atek Reusable Pads aim to create a sustainable, self-sufficient financial based business which will provide locally made and affordable project products to women and girls in Nwoya district and the surrounding areas. The project will employ women and girls who being supported by the Lutino Adunu, providing a viable alternative to the current practice.

Why Atek Pads?

The Atek Pads are a healthy product designed for every woman compared to disposable pads.
